area (code) 51

The Jen-mobile has superpowers.

Last night it demonstrated its ability to be a conduit to another universe.

I was driving along, listening to WGBH (that's 89.7 on the dial), when some call-in talk show started breaking in. Since GBH is out of Boston, I occasionally have issues with its signal, so I didn't think this was too odd.

I didn't hear much, as I was still straining to hear the interview on GBH, but I caught the other station's area code as the host gave the call-in number. It was 601.

Where's that? Let's go to the map, shall we?

Yup, the good old Camry was picking up WPAE 89.7 out of southern Mississippi. Nearly 1500 miles away. This is a new distance record for our household vehicle radios. Our cars have been known to pick up Baltimore stations (a measly 350 miles away), but that's usually when we're near the coast and the weather's being funky. This is the new gold standard.

So who are these people? They're a non-profit station that's "supported by the gifts and prayers of [their] listening audience". The call-in show? "The Gospel Truth" hosted by Miles McKey.

M'kay. See, if the government-harbored aliens living in the Quonset huts nearby are going to make my car pick up wacky radio stations, I'd appreciate it if they didn't send me the word of god.

Can we try to remember that for next time, guys? Thanks.
